Review: 1940s Style Amie Lindy Bop Dress

I came across Lindy Bop a while ago but was a little cautious about placing an order because of the incredible prices on all of their dresses. I know it sounds like a weird thing to say, “I don’t want to buy these because they seem too cheap!”, but it was almost a it sounds too good to be true scenario.

Now, let me explain.

I have grown used to buying vintage reproduction clothing from shops such as 20th Century Foxy and Deadly is the Female where you can pay anything between £70 and £200 for a beautiful dress. Now, I’m not saying I do this on a regular basis but, I would rather save up and spend a lot on one beautifully made dress that is going to last me for years, than buy several cheap ones that so many other people own and are likely to fall apart after a few washes.

I’m also a stickler for quality.  Having previously trained in both tailoring and bridal design I have a thing about quality.  I know what goes into making a well-cut, well-made garment and if it doesn’t live up to these standards then I’m not interested.

So, after a lot of umming and ahing, and a lot of browsing (why are there so many lovely dresses on there?!), I made my decision and ordered the 1940s inspired Amie dress in black at £29.99.

When it arrived, which was only a couple of days later, I had my sceptical head on and was fully prepared for sticking it straight back in the packaging and sending it back. However, whilst pulling it out of its bag, the first thing that struck me was how heavy it was. This is no flimsy garment made from cheap lycra that you can practically see through. Oh no, this is a heavy weight, slightly shiny, polyester with a small amount of stretch in it and, as a result, hangs beautifully.

Not only that, the top section is actually lined, which really did surprise me. This definitely would’ve been an extra cost in the production of this dress and, for the price they sell it for, I would’ve thought that they would’ve wanted to make any tiny saving.

There’s also a fair amount of detailing in it, like the three little pleats on the cuff of the sleeve, the twisted knot on the front neckline and the three sweet little pearlised buttons that do up at the back of the neck which all add up to a much more expensive look.

The only issue I found was, when I tried it on, it was a little big around the waist.  I am a 10/12 depending on the brand and, after consulting the size chart on the Lindy Bop website, I decided to go for the size 12, mainly due to my bust size.  It fitted perfectly everywhere apart from the waist where I prefer to have a much more fitted look.  Luckily, because this is a simply made dress, it was just a matter of pinning it in the right place and zooming up the side seams with my overlocker and it now fits like a glove.

I have been brave and have actually included a photo of myself in it but please excuse the crap phone selfie (quite possibly my first ever!).  I teamed it with a red rose brooch and red heels and pulled my hair back into a high ponytail because it really didn’t look right with my hair down.

The Amie dress also comes in red and I would recommend either colour to anyone.  It is really well made, hangs so beautifully and is really comfortable to wear.  And, not only that, it’s really good value. Now I’m off to see what else I buy from Lindy Bop because they’ve definitely won me over!

  1. What a great post! I’m going to share on our Facebook page as we have a 1940s event June 7th and 8th here at our heritage steam railway. Visitors are encouraged to come in period costume, so this post will be very helpful. Thanks Juliet

    • Oh fantastic! It’s a great website, so they’ll have a lot to choose from and they won’t have to spend too much either. I hope you have a great event!

      • Thanks. I’ve shared to Discover Carmarthenshire Facebook page too. Good luck with your blog. I was going as a Land Girl but very tempted by the dress!

  2. I made it onto your blog accidentally because I too have been skeptical about the quality of the Lindy Bop dresses, and giving that I live in Australia, the returns process can be time consuming and costly back to the UK. Mainly, I wanted to comment and say you look gorgeous in your dress, and to also thank you for a thorough review 🙂

    • Thank you for your kind words. I would definitely recommend ordering something and, if you have any concerns, just get in contact with them as they are very helpful (and lovely!).

  3. I also bought 4 Lindy Bop dresses, but they didn’t look as good as yours. I had to return all 4 of them, because the tailoring was awful. Customer service is also horrible. I’d advise everyone avoiding them.

    • Thanks for your feedback Katinka. I wrote this review nearly 3 years ago when they weren’t such a popular brand as they are now. To be honest, I haven’t bought anything from them since so I cannot comment on their quality and service today. It’s possible these have changed since I last purchased from them which would be a shame.
