12 Fabulous Vintage Reproduction Christmas Dresses

12 Fabulous Vintage Reproduction Christmas Dresses

Every Christmas I like to have a new dress to wear, whether it be for those fabulous evening parties, a work’s do or just to dress up a little on Christmas Day, something I do every year despite the tuts and raised eyebrows from my family! This year, having rekindled my love for sewing, I’ve decided to make my own and the dress I want to make is very much based on my beloved Make Do and Mend Dress. However, I want to style it much more late 1930s than 1940s, so will be changing some of the details. It was going to be made in a beautiful drapey burgundy velvet that has been sat in my fabric stash for years, however, having now laid out the pattern I’ve realised I don’t have enough. Cue blind panic!

I have to have a dress by the 16th, when my first event is happening, so in sheer desperation I’ve been ordering up sample after sample of trying to find the best replacement. However, I have a back up plan and have been trawling all my favourite vintage reproduction online shops for the perfect dress just in case all my fabric resources fail me.

This year the vintage repro brands have out done themselves and there’s some real stunners amongst their party collections. There’s something for everyone at all sorts of price ranges, so I have no doubt I’ll be able to find something should the handmade dress not come to fruition. I’ve put together my favourite picks from them all and have stuck to a very Christmassy theme of red, green and gold.

The Gatsby 1920S Dress

Available in four colour ways, black on black, chartreuse green, silver on black and silver on ivory, this incredibly stunning 1920s cocktail dress is beyond special. Adorned heavily with beads and sequins and finished with decadent beaded fringing, this dress invokes the spirit of all those Bright Young Things from the 1920s.

1920s Ivy Queen Silk Dress

I love that House of Foxy has started on a 1920s range (I can;t wait for their Spring collection!) and this beautiful ivy print chiffon dress is the perfect was to introduce it at Christmas. Featuring the classic drop-waist and pleated skirt it could easily be dressed up with glitzy accessories and heels or dressed down with a long cardigan and Mary Jane shoes.

Stop Staring Timeless Dress

I already have this dress but have decided to include it because I honestly think everyone should own one. It really is the most beautiful and versatile dress in my wardrobe with its incredible underbust seaming, keyhole opening and tailored draping details, but if green isn’t your colour, it very temptingly also comes in navy and red.

1930s Siren Evening Gown

I was floored when I first saw this amazing silk mix velvet 1930s style dress on House of Foxy’s Instagram account and I have to say this is my absolutely dream dress! Ah, those sleeves, that fluted skirt and that beautiful diamanté buckle, it is so incredibly authentic. It also comes in midnight blue velvet and champagne rayon, just in case red isn’t quite stunning enough for you!

1930s Harlow Dress

There’s something so glamorous about floor-length 1930s dresses and this one based very much on Jean Harlow’s unique style from Revival Retro is no exception. Created in a sumptuous drapey satin, in either emerald green and wine red, it’s heavy enough to pool elegantly on the floor. Just perfect for swishing down grand staircases!

Mary Dress - Deco Rose - Red

This is the perfect dress for lunch on the big day with its Charles Rennie Mackintosh rose rayon fabric in red and white. The style is beautifully 1940s and looks wonderful here teamed with accessories in blue, although you could swap them for a touch of green to go full on Christmassy.

1940s Green Satin Sarong Dress

Inspired by 1940s starlet Dorothy Lamour and style in emerald green satin, this seductive dress features Vivien of Holloway’s amazing boning construction which, even if you’re large busted, will still allow you to go without a bra. And, as with all their sarong dresses (there’s heaps of colours and fabrics to choose from), it comes with its own matching short sleeve bolero.

1940s Clarice Dress

This lovely Christmas red dress is created from an original pattern from 1946 in a soft crepe de chine and is perfect for the holiday season’s colder weather because of it’s long sleeves. Why do so many vintage style day dresses have short sleeves?

The Fleur wrap dress - Holly Berry

Now you couldn’t get any more Christmassy than a dress with holly all over it! This gorgeous dress is actually from Heyday’s collection last Christmas but there’s still are a couple left in stock, so hurry and don’t miss out.

Evelana Red Tartan Party Dress

This Evelana dress is brand new from Lindy Bop and is just perfect for Christmas parties. Styled in a red and teal tartan, it has that classic Audrey Hepburn shape and comes with the one thing us vintage gals always hope for, a belt in matching fabric.

Golden Glam Dress

Bring out your sex-bomb in this seductive gold wiggle dress. If any dress invokes the steamy, voluptuous spirit of Marilyn Monroe it’s this one and you’ll certainly turn a few heads at the work’s do showing up in this!

Red Fatale Gown

Another stunner from Deadly Is The Female (and trust me, there are so many to choose from in their shop!), this time in a striking red French crepe. Featuring a gathered off-the-shoulder look and boned bodice, this dress smoothes over your curves and finishes with an oh-so-glamorous fishtail that pools on the floor.

  2. This a select worth toasting! Elegant, chic and offering up something for most every vintage fashion fan. I can’t pick a single favourite (too many lovely options), but must say, I’m wild about THOF’s ivy print. What a fabulous leaf to shine the spotlight on.

    • Ooo, can’t wait to see it on you! I really wish I’d bought this last year as they’ve now run out of my size. It’s just too cute for words.

  4. I love the way you’ve covered most budgets in your list. I love that Stop Staring dress, though I don’t think I could bring myself to spend that much on it… weirdly, I find it easier to get my head round shelling out for House of Foxy stuff, possibly because theirs is UK made.

    • I do know what you mean, as buying something made in the UK and isn’t mass produced is definitely worth spending a little more on. However, the Stop Staring dress was always going to mine, I just couldn’t let it go. I saved up for nearly 6 months in order to buy it as it’s even more stunning in real life.

  5. What a fabulous selection! I really love all those floor length ones even though I really do not have any occasions on which to wear them. I can see the Heyday ones working better for me, they are so pretty!

    • I know, I wouldn’t have anywhere to wear the floor-length ones to either but I’m sure I’d find somewhere if I bought the dress! 🙂 x

  6. I am loving how many 30s styles have appeared this year! Seriously what is better than a knock-out floor-length siren dress?! Apart from a super sparkly flapper dress, perhaps… funnily enough I have bought both in the past month 😉 x

    • Yes, for me nothing quite beats a floor-length Jean Harlow style dress. That’s the epitome of glamour! I just wish I had somewhere to wear them to. x
