  1. hello
My sister & I are looking for 50s style dress shops that we can visit to try dresses on as not sure about the sizing & fitting. We live in Taunton Somerset & would like to visit shops in our area, any help would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks
    Sue Burge

    • Hi Sue, thanks for getting in touch. If you’re going for genuine vintage then I highly recommend you take your measurements, bust, waist and hips, before you go and make a note of them. I always have them stored in my iPhone! Take a tape measure with you as it will make it easier for you to eliminate dresses that won’t fit. Vintage sizes are different to modern ones, so don’t go by what the label says. Also, try things on, even if you’re not sure they won’t suit you, as you’ll often be surprised.

In terms of vintage shops you could try The Emporium in Yeovil or any of the vintage shops in Frome. The place I buy most of mine from, though, is vintage fairs. There’s one coming up in Wells on the 16th of May 2015 called Vintage Somerset’s Vintage and Retro Fair.
If you’d rather go for new dresses that are 1950s in style then there are loads of online shops to choose from such as Lindy Bop, Collectif, Vivien of Holloway and House of Foxy. If you’d rather go and try some on then there’s Deadly is the Female (one of my favourites) in Frome. I’m not aware of any others in Somerset but I would recommend having a look at online shops and then contacting them to ask if they have any stockists in your area. There are shops up and down the country that stock Lindy Bop and Collectif so you’re bound to find one that reachable from Taunton.

I hope you find something you’ll love!
